They deplete natural resources, consume energy and water, and generate waste. A green building is one that reduces or eliminates the negative impacts buildings can have on the environment and can even create positive impacts. Green buildings conserve valuable natural resources and improve our quality of life.

Being green doesn’t mean giving up your current lifestyle or comfort. The advantages of green building go well beyond finances and the ecosystem—they benefit people socially as well. People are healthier and enjoy a better quality of life. Employees are more productive because they work in a cleaner, better environment. This leads to a stronger economy. Being green isn’t just a trend; it’s responsible.

What Makes a Building “Green”?

When designing a green building, the design team must consider the environment and occupants’ quality of life during both construction and operation. Several features can make a building “green,” including:

Efficient use of energy, water, and other resources

Use of renewable energy, such as solar power

Pollution- and waste-reduction measures, like reuse and recycling

High indoor air quality

Use of nontoxic, ethical, and sustainable materials

A design that allows adaptation to a changing environment

Any building can be green—whether it’s a home, office, school, hospital, community center, or even a road, pipeline, or other structure—as long as it incorporates the features listed above.

Benefits of Green Building

The built environment has a major impact on the natural environment, human health, and the economy.

In the United States, buildings account for 39 percent of total energy consumption, 12 percent of total water consumption, 68 percent of total electricity consumption, and 38 percent of carbon dioxide emissions (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2018).

By adopting green-building strategies, we can maximize both economic and environmental performance. Green building methods can be integrated at any stage—from sustainable design and construction to renovation and deconstruction. However, the most significant benefits come when the design and construction team takes an integrated approach from the project’s earliest stages. Potential benefits of green building include environmental, profitability/economic, and health gains, such as:

1. Environmental Benefits of Green Building

This is the most important benefit of green building. It positively influences our climate and ecosystem by reducing water use and reliance on polluting energy sources like coal and the CO₂ released into the atmosphere. Green building not only cuts water waste but can also help replenish water supplies, preserve natural resources, promote biodiversity, and improve air and water quality. It also reduces the carbon footprint by generating less waste and releasing fewer toxic gases into the air. In this way, buildings can actively help save our environment and slow down the pace of climate change.

2. Profitability and Economic Benefits

Protecting the environment also saves you money—a win–win situation. Green buildings offer various economic and cost-effective benefits, such as lower operating costs, greater occupant efficiency, and savings on tenants’ utility bills. They also enhance asset profitability and returns through reduced operating expenses. Finally, green-built properties have lower maintenance costs—thanks to sustainable components—which in turn adds value to the property.

3. Health Benefits

Being green means eliminating harmful toxins and having the ability to breathe fresh, clean air. A healthy indoor environment protects occupant health and improves quality of life by preventing serious illnesses caused by toxic substances. Better indoor quality not only safeguards lives but can also boost employee productivity. Employees working in clean, green properties tend to have better concentration and focus, which improves job performance.

4. Energy Savings and Efficiency

Achieving sustainable, energy-efficient buildings is one of the key challenges we face in the near future.

How do we achieve energy savings and efficiency?

High-performance thermal insulation systems in the building envelope are very effective, making buildings more sustainable and therefore more efficient.

Passive buildings reduce consumption to a minimum: efficient HVAC systems and appliances, natural orientation for airflow and daylighting, and greenery on roofs or façades to regulate building temperature.

5. Improving Air Quality (Indoors and Outdoors)

Optimizing energy consumption while providing adequate comfort and reducing environmental impact is essential for cleaner-air cities, sustainable neighborhoods, and green building. Air pollution is one of the world’s worst environmental problems. Numerous pollutants play major roles in human disease emergence. Climate change driven by environmental pollution affects the geographic distribution of many infectious diseases, as do natural disasters.

The only way to tackle this problem is through public awareness combined with a multidisciplinary approach by scientific experts. National and international organizations must address this emerging threat and propose sustainable solutions.

The Growth of Green Building

More and more authorities, organizations, and institutions are raising awareness of the importance of green building. It is increasingly governed by standards such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), and many other international and local codes.

ESD-Ltd is an Israeli consulting company dedicated to driving the greening of Israel’s growing construction market. In 10 years of operation, we’ve supported some 600 projects. Through the Inogen Alliance network of international EHS firms, our sustainability consulting services make green building practices available worldwide for multinational clients. Below is a case study from one of our many green-building projects.

Case Study: Sustainable Achievements at Shaharut

Shaharut Resort features about sixty suites and villas, plus a main building housing a restaurant and spa, and a small camel farm—covering roughly 46 acres (18 hectares).

Located in the fragile Negev Desert ecosystem in southern Israel, the project owner and operator (the Thai luxury-hotel company Sixth Senses) wanted to minimize environmental damage during construction and operation. They opted for accreditation under the LEED International Standard.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a voluntary rating system for green-building design, construction, and operation. It covers sustainability and impact-reduction aspects: energy savings, resource recycling/use, and user health and comfort. Projects earn points through mandatory requirements and optional credits; the total score determines the certification level (“Certified” through “Platinum”), a global mark of sustainability quality.

Key sustainability measures at Shaharut Resort:

Architecture that integrates with the desert topography and preserves natural terrain.

Covered site during construction to protect against erosion; minimal excavation, with restoration using reserved original material.

Villas built with local stone and pigments; landscaping with native desert cacti and plants.

Walkway beds and most concrete aggregates sourced locally.

Construction mostly by local artisans; furniture and décor elements from community craftspeople—supporting the local economy and reducing transport-related carbon emissions.

Landscaping designed to reduce surface-water runoff and promote soil infiltration and retention.

Use of regional, sustainable, low-emission building materials.

Doors made from specially dried, reclaimed driftwood.

Interior lighting programmed to circadian rhythms via low-energy sensors and fixtures; exterior lighting designed to minimize light pollution and preserve clear night skies.

All units equipped with high-efficiency HVAC, ENERGY STAR electronics, and WATERSENSE plumbing fixtures.

On-site wastewater treatment using biological processes to safely recycle water for environmental release.

Building-management system (BMS) controls all systems to match original design parameters and avoid energy overuse.

Passive climate-control: ample natural light and ventilation through well-sized openings.

Minimal parking to encourage low-emission public transport, with preferred spaces for electric vehicles.

On-site trails and bicycle rentals for guest mobility.

Additionally, the resort purchases GREEN POWER REC, financing renewable energy production by Green-e certified suppliers.

Earth Lab Project

Shaharut Resort also hosts the Earth Lab project, where Sixth Senses showcases sustainability efforts—reducing consumption, producing locally, and supporting communities and ecosystems.
